Lillian M. Nail is the Rawlinson Distinguished Professor of Nursing and a senior scientist at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) where she is also a member of the OHSU Cancer Institute. She holds three degrees, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD, from the University of Rochester School of Nursing. Her early work on the experience of receiving cancer treatment and the impact of cancer treatment on quality of life uncovered issues and problems that were not being addressed in cancer care or in the research on psychosocial issues in cancer. In addition to her research and teaching activities, she is active in service to the research community at a national level as a proposal reviewer for the National Institutes of Health, American Cancer Society, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. She frequently combines her research background, clinical expertise, and perspective as a cancer survivor in public lectures on topics in cancer care and cancer advocacy. Her work has been recognized by awards from the Oncology Nursing Society, Association of Community Cancer Centers, University of Rochester, and the American Cancer Society. In attempting to live up to the findings of the research she’s been involved in on the benefits of exercise during and following cancer treatment, Lillian Nail joined a competitive cancer survivor dragon boat team in 2005. She reports that she has four gold medals from the 2006 season, including the national title.
